Soakers - Vaippapöksyjä


We had a great day yesterday. My mom took me and my boyfriend out to eat at a really nice restaurant. After that she drove us home, and we stopped by a flower field I newer knew existed. The field is kept by the town where I live in, and anyone can go and pick flowers there for free. Even if the summer is already over, there were plenty of flowers left.

Next time I'm taking some scissors with me, so I can cut the sunflowers. What a great place and it isn't very far from where I live either. I hope they have it next year too, so I can enjoy the lovely flowers through out the whole summer.

A good friend of mine is giving birth any day now. They are going for the ecological diaper option and she asked me to knit some soakers. I'm not too familiar with baby things, so all soaker related pointers are welcome. These bunny soakers are made from an online pattern. The pattern is free, but only in Finnish. Non-Finnish speakers could probably figure it out from the diagrams in the pattern. Here's the link (PDF).

I used unspun wool, that another good friend gave me for Christmas last year (Thank you!). I have been swatching with it before, but didn't ever get around to making a proper project with it. It's perfect for soakers, and this kind of yarn is very commonly used for soakers at least here in Finland. Oh, and I needle felted a bunny on the soakers' bum. The next soakers are going to be stripey.

Eilen oli kiva päivä. Äiti vei minut ja poikasystävän syömään Mamiin, joka on suhteellisen uusi ravintola täällä Turussa. En voi muuta kuin suositella lämpimästi. Ruoka oli paitsi herkullista, myös valtavan kaunista. Äiti heitti meidät autolla kotiin pienen kiertotien kautta. En ollut koskaan kuullutkaan että täällä olisi sellainen pelto, josta saa ihan vapaasti käydä poimimassa kukkia. Kaupungin järjestämällä pellolla oli tähänkin aikaan vuodessa kukassa vaikka mitä.

Seuraavalla kerralla pitää ottaa sakset tai puukko mukaan, niin saa auringonkukkien varret poikki. Kukkien lisäksi siellä kasvaa maissia ja lanttua. Toivottavasti kukkapelto on siellä taas ensi kesänä, niin voisi kunnolla nauttia siitä. Pelto ei ole edes kovin kaukana mun omasta, puutarhattomasta asunnosta.

Hyvä ystävä on saamassa vauvan ihan minä hetkenä hyvänsä. He ovat lähdössä kestovaippailemaan esikoisensa kanssa ja pyysivät minulta hahtuvapöksyjä. Minulla ei ole sen kummempaa vauvakokemusta, joten kaikki neuvot villaisista vaippahousuista otetaan mieluusti vastaan mailitse tai kommenteissa. Lanka on virolaista hahtuvaa jonka sain viime vuonna joululahjaksi (Kiitos!). Muutaman mallitilkun olin siitä tehnyt, mutta kunnollinen projekti oli vielä jäänyt aloittamatta. Vaippapöksyihinhän hahtuva sopii ihan täydellisesti. Neulahuovutin pöksyjen peppuun vielä lilan pupun. Seuraavista hahtuvahousuista tulee sitten raidalliset.

Mini socks - Pikkusukat


My grandmother had her 81st birthday today, and I went over to meet her and have some of her delicious blueberry pie. I always make the greeting cards for my grandparents myself, and this time it involved some knitting. I remembered seeing miniature socks somewhere and went for it with my smallest needles and some stash yarn. The socks were knit with ten stitches in the round, complete with a heel flap. I sort of made the pattern up as I went, and couldn't remember exactly what I had done, so the two socks are a bit different from each other.

It says "Remember to keep your toes toasty during the chilly fall evenings. Happy birthday!" on the other side (in Finnish of course:).

Mummo vietti tänään 81-vuotispäiviään. Kävin hänen luonaan kylässä onnittelureissulla ja mustikkapiirakalla. Minulla on ollut tapana tehdä isovanhempien onnittelukortit itse ja tällä kertaa askarteluun kuului hiukan kutomista. Loputonta neulesivustojen virtaa selatessa olin nähnyt jossain miniatyyrisukkia, ja ne tulivat mieleen kortti-ideoita pohtiessa. Jämäkerä kirjavaa lankaa, kaikkein ohuimmat sukkapuikkot ja kymmenen silmukkaa pyörönä. Ohjetta ei ollut, mutta minisukat mukailevat perinteisiä villasukkia kantalappuineen kaikkineen. Toisen sukan kohdalla en enää muistanut kunnolla mitä ensimmäisessä tapahtui, joten ne ei ole ihan samanlaiset keskenään.

Kortin toisella puolella lukee "Muista pitää varpaat lämpöisinä viilenevissä syysilloissa. Hyvää syntymäpäivää!"

Knitting like a machine - Kutoo kuin kone


I recently had a discussion about knitting machines with my mother, and remembered seeing a pile of them at the local recycling center. I think that the exactly same ones have been collecting dust there for some years now, next to the two dozen pedal-driven sewing machines. I went there again, and this time around I took a friend with me. She has been using knitting machines some, and helped me to test if these forsaken ones still work.

There we sat for two hours, setting up the knitting machines, looking for parts and testing them. After some bargaining I left there with a vintage Brother knitting machine, complete with instructions and a curvy ball winder. This whole lot cost me 25 euros (about 35$), which I think is reasonable. The ball winder now makes a good set with the swift I trifted last summer.

The knitting machine is still waiting for a good first project, but the ball winder and swift have already gone to work. You can see the sky blue knitting machine case underneath the curious kitty in the ball winding pic. The yarn is Novita Victoria, which I picked from a charity shop last week. It's soft 70% cotton and 30% wool in a greyish oatmeal color. I have 400g of it, which should be enough for a cardigan.

I already had the Tangled yoke cardigan on my needles, so it didn't make any sense to cast on for a new one. But just hypothetically, I went trough some books, magazines and online patterns to see which would work with my yarn. Then I had to try just a little bit and now I have 1/4 of a cardigan done. The pattern is Knitty's Cinxia with quite many modifications. I'm lengthening the body, have different gauge, altering the sleeves, no twisted sticthes and adding the textured detail to the front lapels too.

Olin aikaisemminkin rekisteröinyt että paikallisessa kierrätyskeskuksessa on parinkymmenen poljettavan ompelukoneen lisäksi kasa neulekoneita. Ne samat ovat tainneet maata siellä pölyttymässä jo useamman vuoden. Äidin kanssa tuli ohimennen neulekoneet puheeksi ja käväisin niitä taas katsomassa. Soitin seuraksi ystävän, jolla on edes jonkin verran kokemusta neulekoneista ja siellä me sitten kykittiin pari tuntia ja äherrettiin kokeilemassa, että löytyiskös kaikki osat ja toimiiko koneet. Mukaan tarttui pienen tinkimisen jälkeen 25 eurolla Brother -merkkinen melko vintage, mutta toimiva neulekone ohjekirjoineen ja tilpehööreinen. Kauppaan kuului kaikeksi riemukseni myös pyöreämuotoinen kerinkaunotar. Se muodostaa hyvän setin kesällä kirpputorilta ostetun vyyhdinpuun kanssa.

Siinä missä neulekone odottelee vielä sopivaa projektia, pääsivät kerin ja vyyhdinpuut jo käyttöön. Kuvassa neulekoneen sininen kotelo näkyy uteliaan kissan alla. Toisella kirppisreissulla löytyi neljä vyyhdellistä, eli yhteensä 400g, kaurapuuron harmaata Novita Victoriaa. Lanka on pehmoista 70% puuvillaa ja 30% villaa. Siitä määrästä pitäisi irrota villatakki.

Ihan noin niin kuin hypoteettisesti selasin mahdollisia ohjeita kirjoista ja netistä, sillä tässähän oli jo yksi villatakki kesken, eikä uutta ollut mitään järkeä aloittaa. Siltikin, piti ihan hiukan vaan kokeilla ja nyt olen kutonut yli neljäsosan neuletakkia, ohjeena Knittyn Cinxia. Teen aika paljon muutoksia alkuperäiseen. Pidennän mallia, neuletiheys on eri, erilaiset hihat, ei kierrettyjä silmukoita, koristepintaa helman ja kauluksen lisäksi nappilistoihin.

Needles: 4mm circulars
Yarn: 3 x 100g Novita Tennesee (100% merserized cotton), color 328
Modifications: Shortened from tunic length and changed the neck line. Crocheted around the neck opening to tidy things up.
Final verdict: I like the color, but the yarn is maybe a little heavy for this project. The whole thing droops a little. If I were to do this again, I would make this from some other yarn and start the neck opening a little lower. I think this will be worn some. I do like this, but I don't love it.

Muutokset: Kudoin lyhyempänä, pikemminkin toppi kuin tunika. Muutin alkuperäisen kauluksen kokonaan. Virkkasin kaula-aukon ympäri kertaalleen siistiäkseni sitä.
Tuomio: Pidän väristä ja se tuntuu omalta, mutta lanka on ehkä hiukan liian raskasta. Koko neule tuntuu roikkuvan päällä. Jos tekisin tämän uudelleen, valitsisin ehkä jonkun toisen langan ja aloittaisin kaula-aukon alempaa. Kyllä tätä varmaan tulee jonkun verran käytettyä kaikesta huolimatta. Ei mikään täysosuma, mutta ihan kiva kuitenkin.

Tangled

Today was my last day at my summer job, where I had worked for the past four months. Now I have one week off, before my lectures start again. I'm kind of looking forward to it too. Maybe not the exams, but going to lectures, meeting people and doing all sorts of projects.

I finished the leaf paneled sweater from Runway knits (more details when I get someone to take proper photos of me wearing it). It turned out just fine, but I'm not super thrilled with it. Maybe it's the cotton that bugs me, it's kind of heavy and has no memory. Properties of cotton, of which I was perfectly aware of when I cast on. Oh, the art of self deception...

I swatched for the Tangled yoke cardigan like a good girl and even blocked my swatch. I got gauge on 3,5mm needles but the fabric seemed too drapey. I started to back out from this project and considered other patterns. After going back and forth for a while, I cast on for the Tangled yoke cardigan anyway and love knitting it. I hope the finished cardigan will be wearable and nice. The yarn is soft and sproingy and my new lace Addis are super fast and supple.

At work - Töissä

Tänään oli vihoviimeinen päivä neljän kuukauden kesätöistä. Seuraavaksi viikko aikaa hengähtää ja sitten luennoille. Oikeastaan olen ihan tyytyväinen uuden lukukauden alkamisesta. Tenttejä ei sentään ole ollut ikävä, mutta ihan kivaa nähdä taas ihmisiä, käydä luennoilla ja tehdä kaikenlaisia projekteja.

Sain Leaf paneled sweaterin valmiiksi ja siitä kuvia tuonnempana, kunhan saan rekrytoitua jonkun ottamaan kunnollisia kuvia minusta se päällä. Siitä tuli ihan kiva, mutta tuskin mikään lempparivaate. Ehkä se johtuu Tenneseestä, joka on jotenkin raskasta ja roikkuvaa. Olin kyllä etukäteen tietoinen siitä, ettei puuvillassa ole joustoa, eikä se palaudu muotoonsa niinkuin villa. Itsepetos on taitolaji lankaa valitessakin.

Tein mallitilkkuja Tangled yoke villatakkia varten kuin kiltti tyttö konsanaan, ja pingotinkin lappusen. Oikea neuletiheys löytyi 3,5mm puikoilla, mutta mallitilkku tuntui jotenkin liian lötköltä. Aloin jo kaavailla muita projekteja tästä langasta ja jahkailin siinä aikani. Lopulta loin joka tapauksessa silmukat Tangled yokea varten ja hyvin pyyhkii. Toivottavasti lopputulosta on yhtä kivaa pitää, kuin sitä on kutoa. Lanka on pehmeää ja ryhdikästä, uudet Addin pitsipuikot nopeat ja notkeat.
