I tried this interesting technique I've seen around. I have absolutely no idea what it's called in English, but the direct translation from Finnish is free yarn fulling or felting. Please tell me if you know the correct name. The basic idea is to lay yarn that felts on a bed sheet and roll it thightly into a package. This package is then slipped into some panty hose and washed in a washing machine at 40oC or 60oC. This causes the yarn to felt and the overlapping bits stick to each other. There are lots of variations, but I can't tell what they are, since I'm such a novise at this.
I used unspun wool in natural white and dark brown. My mom bought these and some in grey from a woman at the market place, who grows her own sheep. In addition to the unspun I used some linen thread in different shades of green, which quite obviously doesn't felt. I put the scarf together on an old bed sheet and rolled it all up and slipped into some panty hose. I ended up washing it twice, first at 40oC and then at 60oC to get it felt properly in my teeny tiny washer. I'm not completely happy with how it turned out, but I think I'm going to wear it anyway. I'm also going to do some more experimentation with this tecnique.

Kokeilin vapaalankahuovutusta, jota olen nähnyt muuallakin kokeiltavan.

that is very cool! never heard of that technique before.
Thanks for blogging about that sort of fulling. I don't think there's a specific English term for it. I think I'd like to try it!
Very interesting! Is this technique used a lot in Finland? Thank you for showing us, with so many great pictures.
Thank you very much for sharing this technique! I'll be trying it out soon as felting is my new obsession nowadays! ^^
Greetings from fellow knitter from Poland. ^-^ I love all your creations and added your blog to my Daily reads.
Keep on inspiring us!
I know that there are some courses about this kind of fulling here in Finland, and I've seen this in a number of Finnish blogs. I'll try to find some time to write a more detailed post about this with some links. Maybe tomorrow.
I have some guests over for a couple of days, and didn't quite realize before how much time I spend on the computer. I would feel like a lousy host if I just sat by my computer now. I haven't even read any blogs during their stay. Maybe it's healhty for a change.

Thank you for your complements:)
I will try to do my best and post about all the things that inspire me and the chanses are that it will inspire someone else as well!
Oh I really love that...I want to experiment with that free fulling technique...I've been thinking about weaving but I have absolutley nowhere to put a whole loom!
But this technique could be a (even more creative) way around that..
Thanks!
