The nice folks at the Book Depository sent me a great new book (KnitKnit: Profiles+Projects from knitting's new wave) and another should shortly follow (Knitter's book of yarn). Well, I might have shown my credit card to them just a little bit to get the books.
In addition to the books above, I have bought two books from trift stores. The first one has information on knitting harps and looms, and the other one has pictures of traditional (19th-20th century) textiles from different parts of Finland. Then there's this winter's Vogue knitting, that I got and the Handknit holidays, that I borrowed from a friend. Oh, and I got a Finnish book on fulling/felting from book sales.
So there's plenty to read and get inspired by. I often find myself lying on the sofa, Smilla the cat purring next to me, listening to Anna Järvinen's music and getting inspired by what I'm reading. Nothing's actually getting done, though.
So today I'll bring my mum's Christmas present to this Show and Tell that is my blog. I made her Knitty's Ice queen in a lovely shade of green and without beads. The yarn is Kidsilk haze, as called for in the pattern, and the color is Jelly. The yarn feels incredibly soft and is really beautiful. It is, nevertheless, quite fuzzy and thus a little hard to knit with. The pattern was lovely and easy to follow, the only part that was a little trickier, was the pickot bind-off, but I think it was worth the trouble.
My mother has been wearing her new cowl/smoke ring/wimple quite a bit, and already asked for another one in a different color. I suppose this is a good compliment to a knitter. She already selected and bought the yarn for the next Ice queen, to be knit some time in the future. This time in a greyish brown shade that's called Drab.My good friend Mona dug up some old boxes from her parent's attic. Her family used to own a yarn and crafts shop, and so their attic is filled with all sorts of bits and pieces. Mona shows some of the things she found there on her blog (sorry, only in Finnish). The good part is that she gave me a whole bunch of knitting needles too. There wer also some hairpin lace tools and I tried swatching with one a little. Maybe there's a hairpin lace project coming up. Or maybe no, we'll see about that.

DrabLisäksi olen ostanut pari kirjaa kirppikseltä (toisessa Marttojen keräämän näyttelyn kuvia vanhoista suomalaisista tekstiileistä ja toinen neuleharpun käytöstä). Talven Vogue Knitting -lehti tarttui mukaan paikallisesta Akateemisesta kirjakaupasta. Sitten on vielä Monalta lainassa Handknit holidays. Lukemista ja inspiraation lähteitä siis löytyy. Olen makoillut Smilla-kissa kainalossa sohvalla, kuunnellut Anna Järvistä ja inspiroitunut lukemastani. Mitään valmista ei ole syntynyt.
Esittelen siis kuukauden verran jälkikäteen äidille annetun joululahjan. Kudoin hänelle Knittyn Ice queenin vihreänä ja ilman helmiä. Kauluri(?) on ollut melko ahkerassa käytössä ja poiki myös tilauksen toisesta samanlaisesta, johon on jo lankakin hankittuna. Joululahja on tehty Rowanin Kidsilk hazesta, väristä Jelly ja seuraava sitten väristä Drab. Eli taisi olla ihan onnistunut lahja. Olen itsekin tyytyväinen lopputulokseen vaikka siitä tulikin hiukan ohjetta lyhyempi, johtuen varmaan tiukasta käsialastani.
Vaikka Kidsilk haze onkin ihanan pehmeää ja kaunista lankaa, on se silti melko pörröistä. Pörrölankaa on hankalaa kutoa, ei sille mahda mitään. Ohjeen pitsimalli on erittäin yksinkertainen, joten ei onneksi tarvinnut pahemmin purkaa. Oikeastaan ainoa, mitä jouduin hetken ihmettelemään oli nirkkopäättely. Sekin sujui lopulta ja tekee kaulurista viimeistellyn näköisen.
